Fence Painting vs Staining

Outdoor wood fences take a beating in San Antonio due to sun and weather.

Choosing between paint and stain is important.

Fence Painting

Pros:

• longer coverage
• more color options
• better protection

Cons:

• can peel over time

Fence Staining

Pros:

  • • natural wood appearance
    • easier maintenance

  • There are Transparent, Semi-Transparent, and Solid Body options now

Cons:

• less UV protection, the more transparent the stain, the less protection it offers.

What Works Best in Texas?

For maximum durability in hot climates, painting often provides better protection. There are both water based and oil based options to choose from. Behr carries a Solid Body Stain in a Water Based that claims a 25 yr life for fences. In the San Antonio area with our weather, I’d say that a 10 year life would be excellent.

However, staining is preferred for aesthetics. The problem is the labor cost when you are re-doing your fence every 2-3 years. Even though the an oil stain can look great for a short time, it is the tint that gives it more staying power and protection for the wood.

Maintenance Differences

Paint: every 5–10 years
Stain: every 2–5 years
